Small step towards victory for anti-pirate artists

A small victory this week for my client kerchoonz.com with the news that the operators of Swedish torrent site The Pirate Bay have been found guilty of illegal file sharing, being fined $3.6m and sentenced to a year each in jail.

In unrelated emails last year, both Indiana Gregg and Ian Morrow, founder members of Kerchoonz.com had asked TPB to remove links to Indiana’s album, “Woman at Work” from its site, being met with ridicule, abuse and sarcasm from subsequent blog posts after TPB made the correspondence public.

The couple complained that illegal file sharing directly took money out of the pockets of artists and requested that they change their business model. TPB refused and although not as a result of this conflict in particular, have landed themselves with a jail sentence.

And Kerchoonz? They are preparing to launch the first social media platform fully integrated with facebook and Twitter, allowing legal free downloads for users and sharing revenue made from onsite advertising with featured artists.
