Marketing success and leadership

Interested to hear everyone’s stories, good and bad about a notable head of a firm and how they affected the effectiveness of that firm’s marketing function. Is a driven leader more useful, even if convinced they are right whilst steering everyone in the wrong direction? Or is it better for them to have faith in their marketing team and let them get on with it, only dipping in when necessary? Does a happy medium exist?
